I personally feel how the character of Lestat is portrayed is just fine. Afterall, he IS most of the time whiny and indecisive and basically a drama queen in the novels--he's also referred to as the "brat prince." The whole Lestat storyline is based on his moral dillemas. If that was lost, the whole essence of the original story would be lost.
...and since there's so much talk about the video projections, I'll also put in my two cents =) I agree with many in that I thought the videos were misplaced. They looked rather cheaply made, from a bad video game of some sort. (btw, I did not find them offending or too grotesque in any way) For those who would like an idea of how they looked, check out Dave McKean's work. Let me emphacise here: I AM NOT PUTTING DOWN HIS WORK. I simply feel that it wasn't a good match for the musical. It is too modern for a musical that has a storyline taking place in the distant past.
For many of the scenes that involved fire, I felt the use of video was simply a lazy way of handling the effects, so much more could have been there instead. Overall, the videos made the musical seem like a cheap production that had a very low budget. The sounds from the videos usually added to this effect and should have been carried out by the orchestra instead.
